Since when is being feminist a bad thing? That’s what I asked myself when I first made an instagram account and was told by different people that I maybe shouldn’t call myself a happy feminist in my bio in order not to “scare people away”. The same is true about me calling myself a hopeful vegan, but that is a story for another post ;)

Many people seem to believe that feminists want to control the world and put men down. However, the definition of feminism is: Belief in and desire for equality between the sexes. Sounds good to me…

Feminism at its core is about equality of men and women, not “sameness.”

As a doula I consider myself an agent of social change through the lens of feminist theory. We aim to empower people in multiple aspects of their lives, beyond the birthing room. Worldwide the doula movement contributes to social justice through challenging various overlapping axes of inequality.

I admire the powerful doulas that managed to connect childbirth choices to a larger reproductive justice agenda by strengthening causes such as LGBT rights, abortion rights, prisoners’ rights, and economic and racial justice.

Over-medicalisation and systems laid down by a patriarchal society unfortunately have developed to disempower women at the gateway to motherhood in many parts of the world. My wish for the women I support is that they know their rights and take an active role in their choices.

Personally, I don’t think there is such a thing as a non-feminist doula. I can only thank my amazing husband for gifting me this awesome shirt. You are the most passionate feminist I know! I love you so much.

What about you? Would you consider yourself a feminist?
